I just got back from the Everclear concert at Fargo, wasn't nearly as good as the Skindred/Sevendust metal awesomeness I experienced last weekend, but still a pretty decent show nonetheless. Prolly because there were too many damn high school teeny boppers there. I know it is probably pretty sad, but Everclear is one of my favorite bands, I've been a loyal follower of there's for almost ten years now, and even survived their crummy pop phase around 2000, that still lingers on a bit today with them. This is my third time catching them in concert, and the first time seeing the new version of Everclear with two new guitarists and a new drummer replacing Craig and Greg.
The opening band was called 'Holiday' whom I never heard of before. They were an alt-rock-pop sounding band, but I really didn't care for their music that much, they played about 8 songs and thankfully got off stage. The setup time between Holiday and Everclear was strangely long, about a good 35-40 minutes it seemed. Anywho, Everclear finally got on stage and opened with "Everything to Everyone" then proceeded with a lighter version of "Heroin Girl." I don't think Art dug the wild crowd, he told the crowd to back so they could stop crushing dumb girls who stood against the rail at the front of the pit. Silly gals. They performed a pair of new songs too, but Art didn't mention word on anything about a new album coming out anytime soon. Middle of their set, Art said he wanted to do an Acoustic song but his Acoustic guitar got damaged on the plan so he just did a solo version of "Strawberry" with some heavy audience participation that I enjoyed greatly.
Probably my biggest shock was they played two songs from their debut album, World of Noise. "Fire Maple Song" and "Loser Makes Good." The past two times I seen them they only played one track from that album before totaled, and playing two on what seemed like a shorter set list for them was a great feeling. They avoided most of their crappy poppy stuff from Learning How to Smile, except for Wonderful of course. The thing that bothered me the most is that I got bonked in the head from another bodysurfer again, but why someone bodysurfed in the middle of freaking 'Wonderful' still boggles my mind. I guess those teeny boppers sure now how to mosh or something.
There actually was no gap between the pit and the stage, where last week it was filled with at least half a dozen bouncers. Eventually one dumb dude who looked like he couldn't of been older than 14 got surfed up and rolled on stage. Art repeatedly told the moron to leave off stage, and he just stood there and hung onto Art for about a good minute before one bouncer finally dragged him off stage. They closed things rather quickly with Santa Monica after what seemed like only 12 songs or so. They came back out of course and Art gathered a couple dozen gals on stage like he did last time I seen Everclear play two years ago, but this time instead of singing "Rockstar" he did a cover for "Jenni/8675309." That was unique, and actually did sound pretty decent too.
Even though they played 15 songs, the show felt rushed and too short overall, but I guess that was expected for only being a $20 show. Another thing that bothered me about this show was afterwards I went to find the souveneir stand in hopes of adding another band shirt to my collection, and there wasn't any Everclear memorbillia for sale at all. But get this, there was shirts and cds on sale for freaking Holiday. Insane. Anyways here is the set list to the best of my knowledge in no particular order.
From World of Noise - Fire Maple Song, Loser Makes Good
From Sparkle and Fade - Strawberry, Heartspark Dollar Sign, Heroin Girl, Santa Monica
From So Much for the Afterglow - Everything to Everyone, I Will Buy You a New Life, Father of Mine
From Learning How to Smile - Songs from an American Movie, Wonderful
From Slow Motion Daydream - Volvo Driving Soccer Mom
Other - 2 new songs I didn't catch the names of, & the cover of "Jenni"
