-Hey hey everybody. Not a whole lot going on, tonight marks day 5 of a six day stretch at work, and then Dale's ultimate vacation 2007! I am going to Wisconsin for the Midwest Gaming Classic, the biggest game convention in the Midwest of the year. The Team Fremont crew will be there again, and I am looking to blow a lot of money on the many game vendors I hear will be there. Full report on my next blog.
-Speaking of blowing money on games, I have no idea why but I decided to get a Game Gear. It was $20 with a power brick and I also got Streets of Rage 2 ($10) and X-Men ($5) for it. I also picked up Destruction Derby for the PSone, graphics didn't age as bad as I thought they would, but the game was a lot tougher to steer than I recall, maybe they start you off with a shitty car or something. I dunno.
-Finally got around to beating Civil War on 360 earlier this week. Civil War can be completed in under four hours. Seriously. All there is to it is recreating past battles from Civil War and fighting as both South and North. There is no real story as little recaps from the History Channel set up each battle. The brief history lessons are nice since I'm a big history nut. The gameplay feels like a very dumb downed Call of Duty engine, but with Civil War weaponry. It is cool monkeying around with the Civil War weapons with their unique reload animations, and blasting off cannons and gatling guns. Civil War is so basic and isn't terribly fun to play, but since the atmosphere is so different and fresh than the same 'ol World War II game it is certainly a nice change of pace.
-Also got around to playing a bit of Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam on PS2. It launched on the Wii of course, but the port just hit the PS2, and damn was it a disappointment. The game is more like Tony Hawk Jr as it strips away such staples of past Tony Hawk games like manuals and reverts. I was excited for the game as it took the basic Tony Hawk skating mechanic and mixed it with SSX-esque downhill races. The races are initially fun, but nearly all of them are done within a minute or two and they quickly grow repetitive. There are also no other pro skaters in the game other than Tony as the rest are stereotypical fictional characters such as the snobby rich gal to Johnny Potsmoker to the token gotch chick. Might be worth renting and plowing through in a weekend, but nothing more than that. Big disappointment.
-Been catching up on a couple comic trades I got last year. I finished off House of M which was good, but definitely no Civil War. I felt like I was missing out a lot of the story too and like a good chunk of it was covered in crossover titles. I am about 6 issues in right now of the 12 issue hardcover of the Astonishin X-Men, and I am really digging that book. The artwork is amazing and the story is very enticing. I may just have to start picking up that book on a regular basis.
-I have been plowing through the Arrested Development DVDs a lot recently. I finished off the first two seasons, and am now on the last disc of season three. That show is just brilliant, I haven't laughed so hard at a sitcom since Seinfeld. Everyone must at least give this show a chance and check out a couple episodes. It's too bad the show ended way too soon. I also finally saw Ferris Buehler's Day Off. Very good buddy film, especially for its time period in the mid 80s.
-I have been catching up on a lot of wrestling lately too. There is just too many damn PPVs to keep up with off WWE 24/7. Saw Vengeance 2003 which I actually own on tape somewhere because I remember it was back when Smackdown was actually kicking ass when Lesnar and Angle were trading the belt and it had an awesome tag division. That show ruled with Eddie and Benoit having a classic match in the US Title tournament final match, a wacky sportz entertainment match with Vince McMahon and Zach Gowen, a damn good tag title match with World's Greatest Tag Team against Billy Kidman and Rey Mysterio, the infamous APA Bar Brawl and there were a couple other goodies on there too.
Also watched ROH Survival of the Fittest 2006 with Rich from work last week which had its own weird version of Survior Series style rules. Ok, but not the best Ring of Honor show I recalled. Right now I'm watching ECW Anarchy Rulz '99 which is kicking ass. Little Guido/Super Crazy/Tajiri had an awesome triple threat match, Credible/Sabu had a sweet hardore style match, and right now there is a sweet triple threat going on between Mike Awesome/Taz/Masato Tanaka. Ah, the good old day when the original ECW was alive and kickin!
-Tiz about all I got for you this time, hopefully I'll have some good stories for my next update from the MGC!
