2010 marked the first year On Tap participated in Extra Life, the fund raiser many VGevo Podcast Network members participate in each year. We planned it out that we were going to be recording at Chris & Lyzz’s place for the 24 hour epic event. After spending way too much time packing a ton of games I made haste to Chris & Lyzz’s. So without further ado, here is the rundown of what we played.
I started off with my favorite wrestling game, WWF No Mercy on N64. I attempted the 100 man Survival mode which I have never completed. First attempt computer got luck and eliminated me just a few minutes in. Second attempt I got real far with my created wrestler before Mankind eliminated me with the incredibly lame sleeper hold that can be exploited out of a weak grapple. Had a blast interacting with Biffstix and LAAG in the chat and reminiscing on wrestling history as each character from wrestling’s past entered the ring.
Next up was a little more love on the N64 with Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth, which is the sole shmup on the N64. Got to the last level, but my inferior shmup skills kept running out of lives before the final boss. From there it was onto the 360 where Chris and Lyzz and a few Xbox Live friends joined us for Firefight. After the AI schooled us a couple of times we loaded up the gametype variant I had to get all the Firefight achievements within an hour. Good times! We then toyed around with a bunch of custom race variants I had downloaded on the 360 that Geoff of InDis got me hooked on.
After Halo I got a buzz from my friend Steve who recently picked up a 360 and a bunch of games and he wanted to test out Xbox Live and play some rounds of Legends of Wrestlemania against me online. This is what I was hoping to get out of Extra Life, finally digging into a bunch of games I bought that I have yet to start or barely scratched the surface of. Steve and I exchanged some wins for awhile before it was time to move on to the only bit of pinball I got to play for Extra Life. Definitely thought I would get a little more pinball in than that.
From there it was onto my “punishment.” BiffStix made a request upon his donation for a game for all of us to play that we normally would not. He knows of my MMO boycott, and he put an end to it by requesting I play Lord of the Rings Online for an hour. Chris helped me out and Lyzz showed me the ropes and I knocked out a few quest with them in the hour. Not that bad of a game and I have nothing against it, just the paranoia of getting addicted to them and not making time for the many other games that are in my backlog.
After that it was time for Chris & Lyzz’s “punishment” which was for them to play a game of Madden against each other, so I made sure to bring Madden NFL 2010. The two have only witnessed just a couple of local college games and barely even follow the sport, so watching them try to comprehend football and help them out with the controls was something to be seen to be believed. Actually, you can see it because of the recommendation of Biffstix, I made sure to record it off the stream, so make sure to go here to watch the gridiron madness = http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/10251703
While helping those two out in Madden, I threw in the Portal for the first time in forever off The Orange Box. In that game I swear I am as dumb a box of bricks because it is nearly impossible for me to make progress in that game. With the help of Chris & Lyzz I made it pass about a dozen rooms and got to the point where I got both parts to the Portal gun.
After Portal and a quick pizza break, I threw in Civilization Revolution because I thought this would be one of the rare days I would have enough time to get a complete game in. After nearly two hours into the game, I get a message from two of my friends both named Rich who saw me online and both happen to be huge CivRev fans. They want to get an online game in upon knowing of me being online for awhile. Since I am playing in a Game of the Week match against the CPU, I cannot save my current game but decide to screw it and join the Rich’s in a game. We get about two hours into that game online and then my 360 freezes. Bam, four hours of CivRev progress with nothing to show….except one 9 point achievement indicating I discovered my first artifact.
From there it was onto more Halo Reach with Geoff and a few other VGevo Extra Life marathon folks. We rocked some Team Slayer and Invasion matchmaking, and playing Halo Reach with Geoff drunk is quite the experience. After that we only had a couple hours left and I finally crack open Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions and got the tutorial and the first two levels as time expired.
I honestly thought I would have a lot more time for more games to play part of me wished Extra Life ran for 36 hours instead of 24. I probably could not have made it as I really had to dig deep to make those last two hours. Chris barely made it too, and poor Lyzz hit the wall and passed out with around four or five hours left. Those two primarily played Lord of the Rings Online, with only a timeout for Halo Reach and Madden, and Lyzz also got a couple hours in with Red Dead Redemption.
All in all it was a great time, and we raised $131 for Extra Life, let us shoot to double that next year! It would have been awesome to make our $500 goal, but on the bright side at least I can still honor my boycott of Transformers 3 since we did not meet the goal.
Thanks again to everyone who tuned in to us on the stream and to everyone who donated! We would not have made it the 24 hours without you!
